Many people loose a ring or something of value and if they can't find it they assume it's an easy thing to rent or even buy a Metal Detector, turn it on and like magic, find their lost ring! Usually, nothing could be further from the truth!
First of all, many make the mistake of buying or renting a Metal Detector that simply put, is just too darn complicated to figure out! "Discrimination" settings, "Ground Balancing," "Modes" of operation etc... Your average person with no experience using a Metal Detector may face a daunting task at properly setting up the machine that, if set incorrectly, will be of little use at finding anything!
Here's some advice from someone who's been using Metal Detectors for over 30 years. If your dead set at buying or renting a detector, DON'T spend more than $100.00 on it! You need a quality but simple to operate machine with few bells and whistles. Remember, you're most likely looking for a surface target or one that's not buried very deeply. Don't be concerned with "depth" or anything else the salesman may be trying to talk you into! Think quality manufacturer such as White's, Fisher, Garrett, or Tesoro and look for their least expensive unit.
Even better advice would be...
